Sharing and caring breaks down menopause stigma at Barnardo's

From supporting children to supporting colleagues, the team from Barnardo’s children’s charity in Plymouth recently attended a full-day training workshop with Talking Menopause. Our team were delighted to head down to the Futures Inn in Plymouth to deliver an informative and interactive menopause awareness session.

The workshop itself was a huge success, with the Barnardo’s staff learning the ins and outs of menopause - including symptoms, treatment, nutrition and most importantly, practical workplace solutions.

Our resident nutritional expert, Mel Wakeman, delivered a session on nutrition and how the right food can help ease menopausal symptoms and also shared her top tips on how to maintain a healthy diet at work.

Throughout the day, we encouraged the attendees to share their personal experiences with each other to help create a positive, open working environment in which employees feel comfortable discussing the menopause. It was heart-warming to see so much compassion and empathy in one room.

Speaking of the session, Shona Towl, Finance Lead & Business Support at Barnardo’s said:

“The sessions were engaging, fun and allowed staff to open up and talk about their own experiences. It helped staff to realise they are not alone, help is available and it is OK to talk about the "M" word.”

Talking Menopause was founded in 2017 and is now a leading provider of workshops, webinars and individually tailored programmes helping organisations transform their culture and create menopause-friendly workplaces.

Menopausal women are demographically the fastest growing group of workers in the UK, but despite it being a natural life process, the menopause – and how symptoms can affect employees and organisations as a whole – is rarely discussed.
